      A place may also conjure contradicting emotions—the warmth of community and home juxtaposed with the stress of dense urban living. Sense of place—the way we perceive places such as streets, communities, cities or ecoregions—influences our well-being, how we describe and interact with a place, what we value in a place, our respect for ecosystems and other species, how we perceive the. Urban squares, or pracas, have been critical features in the streetscape and public life of Brazilian cities since the colonial era began in , half a millennium ago. The role and appearance of these small but symbolically rich spaces have evolved as Brazilian social conventions, concepts of urban design, and aesthetic values have themselves.

    This research project reconsiders writer William H. Whyte’s Street Life Project and seminal study The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces ().
